[7 Questions] w/ Jono Toh

In conversation with Artist Jono Toh on precision, simplicity, and colours in life.

1.      Monochrome and colourful – who is Jono Toh?

Yes, I pretty much only wear black, white and a bit of grey because that’s what I feel most comfortable in but I love living in and working with colour. I love contrast and that really shows across all aspects of my life.

2.     You’re known for your use of bold colour and your open invitation to the viewer. What are you hoping to evoke - or perhaps leave open - in those who experience your work?

I don’t want to tell people what to feel. I want my work to create a space for them to create their own connections and associations and bring their own story to the works. If it sparks reflection, curiosity, or even just a moment of pause, I’m happy.

3.     Your paintings are composed of freehand geometric lines - each one requiring precision, presence, and a steady hand. Where and when do you best find the time and space to be in your flow?

I can find my flow anywhere. It’s less about the physical space and more about my mental space. I find inspiration in the most random places and times and just let the creative process flow from there which Is what I love about what I do.

4.     What role does time play in your creations - in both pace and perspective?

My work is very slow which is a reflection of not only my introspection but also the time it takes to really understand the inspiration behind my work and get a true understanding of the impact it’s had on me and how it might shape my future. Without taking the time to properly deconstruct these thoughts you really can’t be sure that you’re fully understanding the whole picture.

5.     As a artist working across continents, how do your environments - from Hong Kong to Miami -  influence and inspire your rhythm, your colours, your mindset?

My work is less about locations and more about my lived experience. So having lived in numerous cities I’m able to explore the impact that’s had on me and how it’s shaped my approach to life which then impacts my choices of colours etc depending on what it is I’m trying to communicate.

6.     What does simplicity mean to you - in art and in life?

Simplicity means removing the noise. It means deconstructing a moment, thought, situation, emotion, whatever…until you’re left with the one foundational element that gives it meaning.

7.     Your world is stills in motion. What projects are you excited about next?

I am currently focused on a new series of works exploring the relationship between thought and form which will be part of my first solo exhibition in Paris later this year.
